Frequently asked questions

Here you will find answers to the most common questions student ambassadors encounter. From specific student life details to best practices for campus tours, this section is a valuable resource to enhance your confidence and knowledge. Explore the topics below to better prepare for your role as a Canisius University ambassador.

What is the percentage of commuters versus resident students?

Canisius has a vibrant, active campus community with a healthy mix of both lifestyles. Roughly 70% of undergraduate students live in college-owned or affiliated housing on or adjacent to campus, while about 30% commute or live off-campus.

How is safety on campus?

Campus safety is a top priority at Canisius. The Department of Public Safety operates 24/7/365 out of the Bosch Residence Hall basement, providing round-the-clock patrols (on foot, bike, and vehicle), emergency response, and security services. Canisius Public Safety officers are granted peace officer status under New York State law, giving them full powers of arrest on campus. Blue-light emergency phones are located across the grounds, and the department works closely with local law enforcement to maintain a secure, welcoming environment.

Can students have a car on campus, and how much is a parking pass?

Yes, all students are allowed to have a car and purchase a parking permit. Parking passes range from $50 to $150 for the academic year (depending on the specific permit type, with resident freshman passes typically around $150 and commuter passes around $90). Students can easily register their vehicles and purchase their permits online through their myCanisius portal.

What are the dining options and meal plans like?

Canisius offers several flexible meal plans depending on whether a student lives on campus or commutes. Plans like the Griff Unlimited or weekly swipe options come paired with "Griff Bucks" which can be used at various dining locations across campus. There are also specialized commuter meal plans available for students who want the convenience of grabbing meals or coffee between classes.

How do students get involved outside of the classroom?

There are over 100 student clubs and organizations on campus, ranging from academic honor societies and cultural clubs to special interest groups and student government. At the start of every fall semester, Student Life hosts a vibrant activities fair where new students can easily meet club leaders, sign up, and find their niche. We also offer robust intramural and club sports alongside our 21 NCAA Division I athletic teams.

What are the housing requirements for incoming students?

All freshman, sophomore and junior students are required to live on campus unless they are commuting from their permanent family address within the local area. This helps build a strong campus community right from the start. We offer a mix of traditional residence halls (like Bosch and Frisch) and suite-style or townhouse options (like Dugan Hall and the Delavan Townhouses) as students progress.
